Craft beer for runners and endurance athletes
The Peer-Reviewed Pint
To help you wash down the latest evidence in the world of running science and sports nutrition, here's a snifter from my recent craft beer exploits.
Rainbow Sherbet Sour
Brewed by Gweilo Beer (Hong Kong, China).
Fruited sour.
4.5% ABV.
A nice sherbetty sour. A little weak for my liking, but very drinkable nonetheless. Swing gweilo, sweet rainbow chariot. As they sing at the Hong Kong rugby sevens.

Longer HIIT intervals increased time near VO2max
This meta-analysis examined short-term oxygen uptake during HIIT across 86 studies. Longer intervals and variable-intensity intervals generally produced more time near VO2max. The main caution: this does not prove better long-term fitness or race performance. But don't stop there. Read more here →
Marathons were associated with short-term heart changes
This meta-analysis examined short-term heart changes after road marathons. The study included 69 studies and 3,274 healthy adult runners. Marathons were followed by clear short-term rises in cardiac blood markers and modest changes in heart function, but long-term harm was not established. But don't stop there. Read more here →
Super shoes helped less on steeper climbs
This randomized repeated-measures treadmill study tested 12 competitive male runners. The Nike Vaporfly reduced oxygen cost on flat running and gentle uphill running, but the benefit faded as the incline got steeper. The main caution: the study was small, short, male-only, and lab-based. But don't stop there. Read more here →
Vitamin D3 was linked to lower marathon biomarkers
This 8-week placebo-controlled trial studied 21 amateur marathon runners with low vitamin D. Vitamin D3 supplementation was linked to lower post-marathon blood markers of muscle stress, cardiac stress, and protein oxidation. The main caution is that the study was small and measured biomarkers, not real-world recovery. But don't stop there. Read more here →
