Read the exercise science articles I reviewed this month:

VO2 Max Was Associated With Endurance Proxies

VoiceThis retrospective observational study examined lab test data from 888 runners and cyclists. VO2 max and exercise economy best explained speed or power at lactate threshold and lactate turnpoint. The main caution is that the study measured lab-based performance proxies, not race results. But don't stop there. Read more here →

Carbohydrate rinsing modestly improved cycling performance

VoiceThis 5-visit randomized crossover trial studied 11 trained cyclists. A carbohydrate mouth rinse modestly improved a short cycling time trial and lowered perceived effort. The main caution is that the study was tiny, lab-based, and not done in runners. But don't stop there. Read more here →

Low-altitude intervals improved altitude runners' 5,000 m times

VoiceThis 8-week randomized controlled trial studied 42 trained runners living at moderate altitude. High-intensity intervals improved 5,000 m performance, with a slightly larger improvement when the intervals were done at lower altitude. The main caution is that the study was small and very altitude-specific. But don't stop there. Read more here →

Tart cherry juice showed mixed recovery benefits

VoiceThis systematic review and meta-analysis examined tart cherry juice for recovery after muscle-damaging exercise in trained athletes. Tart cherry juice showed some benefits for strength recovery and inflammation, but the evidence was mixed. The main caution is that soreness and real-world running benefits were not clearly improved. But don't stop there. Read more here →
